         Lip syncs!!!

Ok, but the lip syncs in class were SO FUN. Like, what a fun party, it was honestly the perfect way to end a semester of classes. I am a big fan. But yeah, everyone's lip syncs were so so good. The lip syncs and the song choices fit everyone's clowns so perfectly and the work that everyone did really reflected their clowns. It was a joy to watch.

I had a lot of fun prepping for this lip sync. I've known what song I was going to use for the lip sync for a while, so I've been mulling on what to do for the lip sync for a while. I knew pretty early on that I wanted what I was doing to be an active situation, not just a lip sync in the style of a concert lip sync or something like that. I wanted there to be a story of some sort? Or at least something that my character was trying to get. I had the idea of a sort of interrogation/intimidation pretty early on. I had the image of a dark basement and someone is tied up in a chair and my character is trying to get something from them.

As I mulled more on the project, I started to get more of a clear idea of what the 'story' was. Some civilian, or individual, maybe an informant, has seen too much. They know something they shouldn't know. So, I have to convince them to stay quiet. I have a contract that will guarantee their protection from my mob and other gangs as long as they sign it and stay quiet. It's like a witness protection program, but for a 1940's mobster.

So the piece was going to be about me trying to get this person to sign the contract by whatever mean's necessary. Perhaps I would intimidation, but mostly, I would use the lure of seduction as a means to get the contract signed. I dunno why, but a bisexual 1940s seductive mobster sounded like such a fun thing to do, so yeah. :) I had this idea that at the very end of the song after the huge dance break and Gwen Verdon has her whole, "I aalllwwaayyys GEEETTTT what I aaiiimm FOOORRR" that Nickie would pull out a gun and threaten the informant with the gun, which would show the very violent side of Nickie. However, I didn't want to do a finger gun cause that's Willoughby's thing, and fake guns are not allowed on campus at all. Not to mention the fact that guns can be extremely triggering, so I didn't want to scare or trigger anyone in class. So that idea had to go. (But in my head, it looked so cool)

As I worked on that section of the piece, I struggled figuring out what to do to show intimidation or put the person in their place. Cause beforehand, I get really frustrated with their obstinance and I just want them to sign the god-damned contract! So how do I show how dangerous and frustrated I am? I don't know if I found the best answer in the final product BUT I did really like how I changed the very end of the piece. I added the whole broken neck moment towards the end of my process and I'm so glad I did. It was scary but something Nickie would totally do and it refers back to his nickname of 'Snaps' sooooo. All in all, I thought it was a good ending.

So yeah! I felt pretty good about my lip sync! I was a little stressed cause the whole striptease wasn't wholly figured out yet and I was worried I wouldn't get my buttons undone and all that fun stuff, but it all turned out well! I had a lot of fun during the lip sync and yeah. I had a moment where after I finished, I forgot I had to stay in character, so I came out and smiled at everyone, but then I remembered I was still my clown, so I hurried and got back into character. That was kinda funny lol.

Lauren recorded all our movement projects, and I went back and I watched them and I move a lot faster than I thought I did. Like, a lot faster. I haven't watched the whole thing (I haven't mustered the emotional capacity for that yet haha) but the parts I did watch, I move much faster than I thought I did. In the moment, I thought I was moving so slowly and seductively, but watching it, I'm still walking quite fast. I'm a naturally fast walker, I vroom vroom to wherever I'm going, and it translates into a lot of what I'm doing. And that fast movement often comes across as me being anxious or worried about something when I'm oftentimes not. So that's something I need to be aware of. What feels slow to me may not necessarily come across as slow to the people that are watching. So yeah!

This project was a lot of fun, I had a lot of fun exploring things and doing things I normally wouldn't do (striptease, I'm lookin' at you) and I think I've learned a lot in this process. I'm going to write some more blog posts just wrapping up my thoughts on the end of the semester, but I just wanted to write briefly about my lip sync real quick. :) Happy end of semester!

symbiosis? i haven't heard that name in years

Okey dokey artichokey. Symbiosis. Yes. Cause I definitely know what that word means... This is one of those words that I can vaguely recall learning about in a middle school science class, but the word itself is. Forgotten. Lost knowledge. My own personal, burnt, destroyed Library of Alexandria.       So before I looked up the definition on Google, the first thing I was thinking of was two organisms living together in some way. I was initially thinking it was one of those relationships where one party benefits, and the other neither benefits nor is harmed in the relationship. But after looking it up, symbiosis is, " interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both." or, " a mutually beneficial relationship between different people or groups." Coolio. That's what Google has to say about the definition, but what are my thoughts on it?     When I think of symbiosis, I think of ...

they see me rollin'

We are moving and rolling! I was not anticipating the soreness I am feeling from doing somersaults, but lo and behold, I am sore. Specifically, my lower back is sore. I don't know what I was thinking or expecting, but I really wasn't expecting soreness lol.  I am having a lot of fun with the things we're doing though. I've never done any dance classes or anything with the body, but I do enjoy moving my body. Whenever I've been in a show, I've always enjoyed learning and doing choreography, I enjoy running and other various activities that push the body, etc. Doing light tumbling has been really exciting for me. There have definitely been moments of fear or hesitation, but it's mostly excitement. Nervousness and excitement are just the same emotion though, just perceived differently given your perspective and circumstance. Trying out the dive rolls yesterday was super fun for me. There are obviously lots of things to fix on it, but I think I'm headed in t...

community (not the show)

So. Contact improv. Visually, to me, contact improv is all about the movement of the body in tandem with the movement of somebody else. You feed and go off of each other's touch and movement and create from there without words. Only your bodies. Oo. Sounds kinda saucy. ANYWAYS. Watching a few other videos, contact improv is obviously about more than just moving with somebody else and making stuff up. After watching several videos, I feel like a big part of contact improv is community. A lot of examples I saw online showed large groups of people doing contact improv together, even if they were still in duos, and several videos showed the people practicing, showed them hanging out, eating together, etc. These people are finding connection with others without speech, they are just fully experiencing each other in the moment and pushing and pulling with them like the moon. They are connected to each other and create something together. It is unique to the individuals, and unique to t...
